Cynergy Training Preps Athletes for HYROX Comp

HYROX competition training at Cynergy Training

Cynergy Training athletes are HYROX ready! Preparation means more than showing up—it’s about committing to extra sessions and attacking their weaknesses. HYROX, often described as “the world series of fitness,” blends endurance running with functional strength movements—sled pushes, wall balls, burpee broad jumps, rowing, and more. Athletes complete 1 kilometer of running between each workout station. It’s a competition designed to test every aspect of fitness: strength, endurance, power, and grit.

Cynergy Training members are embracing the challenge. As Coach Heather Vargus put it, “When many of your friends are doing it too—the hype is contagious.”

HYROX Categories and Cynergy’s Lineup

HYROX offers multiple ways to compete:

  • Open – Standard weights, full 8K run, and all 8 stations.
  • Doubles – Two athletes split the workout stations but run together.
  • Pro – Heavier weights and the ultimate test of HYROX strength.
  • Relay – Four athletes divide the race, each completing 2 stations and 2K run.

From Curiosity to Competition

For some, HYROX started as a simple “What if?”

Cynergy member Colleen Florence recalls, “It all started with the simple thought: ‘Can I do that? It looks fun… in a painful kind of way.’ My sister Anna and I wanted something that combined her love for running and my love of CrossFit. We looked at each other and said, ‘Why not?’”

For others, it was the lure of a new challenge. “I’ve done CrossFit competitions, a marathon, and 4 half marathons,” said Pro competitor Coach Allie Sorgi. “I wanted to put my strong aerobic capacity and strength endurance to the test.”

For member Anna Dunbar, it was about jumping on the opportunity with friends: “Coach Emily asked if I’d be interested and I said yes! I was feeling ready for a new challenge and a new goal.”

Training the Cynergy Way

One thing all competitors agree on: Cynergy’s training style is built for HYROX success.

HYROX may be new to some, but Cynergy’s programming is a perfect match. “Cynergy training and HYROX are practically interchangeable depending on the day you go,” Heather said. “It’s all cross-training… I’m just doing more long cardio workouts with sprinkles of strength.”

For Allie, it’s the environment: “I have access to all the equipment I need and a solid group of people who push me past my limits every day.”

CJ Thomas has upped his cardio and long-distance work: “Our strength training builds have pushed my squat and deadlift maxes, and now I’ve added running and rowing over longer distances to build stamina.”

Greg Reed’s training is mileage-heavy: “I still attend daily classes but now run 14–16 miles per week.”

Confidence and Challenges

Every athlete has a station they can dominate:

  • Emily: Ski erg and wall balls
  • Anna: Running and burpee broad jumps
  • Greg: Rowing and ski erg
  • CJ: Weighted strength stations

And everyone has a challenge—most often, the repeated running at competition pace.

Mindset Shifts and Mantras

HYROX training isn’t just physical—it’s mental.

“I can do hard things!” is Colleen’s mantra. Allie believes “failure is just success in progress.” Anna leans on Muhammad Ali’s reminder that “Impossible is temporary.” Greg keeps it simple: “Your mind will quit before your body does.”

Heather says the best part has been the renewed spark: “By having this goal and something new to train for, I’ve been more mindful of my training, recovery, and dietary habits.”

All Eyes on Boston

With the HYROX Boston event ahead — September 26-28, 2025 — the Cynergy crew — Allie, Heather, Colleen, Anna, Emily, Greg, CJ, Zuli, Larry, Clyde, Nick, and Andrew — are ready to prove that hours of focused work, training weaknesses, and a strong community effort pay off on race day.

As Emily summed it up, “It’s just work.” But at Cynergy, it’s work done together—and that’s the secret weapon.
