Getting to know more about Marc:
What brought you to Cynergy?

In 2009, several people in my department were going to do this ‘First Responders Challenge’ thing at Cynergy.  I had been active and lifting for a while so I figured why not give it a try. I had been an athlete my whole life.

How long have you been a CrossFitter and Coach?

So I came in 2009 and haven’t left since that First Responders Challenge.  I got my Level 1 cert in 2010 and began coaching a little over a year later

What is your athletic background look like?

I grew up as a runner.  I was a cross country runner in the fall and then I ran indoor and outdoor track the rest of the year.  By the time I got to college I really had enough of running and began lifting. I got into body building for a couple years then did intramural sports in college.  Once I started in police work I just kept going to the gym and lifting weights to stay in shape for my job.

What would you say is the best part of being a CrossFit Coach?

At first it was that I liked to pass on what I knew.  I enjoy the sport and want to tell people. Now I enjoy seeing people who have been doing it for a while, they accomplish a movement or something they have been attempting for some time.

What advice would you give to a new athlete?

Don’t get frustrated.  You will fail, everyone here has.  Keep working and you will get it. Also remember, working out like this is to keep you healthy, hurting yourself in here,  hurts you in real life. Be smart, if you need rest, take it.

And, a veteran athlete?

Take care of your injuries when they occur.  Don’t think I can handle this and keep going.

What are your current goals as a Coach?

Keep learning. Just because we are the coaches or we have been doing this a long time we don’t know everything by any means.

And, as an athlete?

Stay healthy, have fun. Maybe string my bar muscle ups.

What is your favorite movement to Coach?

Snatches or Overhead Squats.  They are high skill and it feels great  to see someone or yourself get a lift and be caught off guard by how good it it can make you feel.

What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?

I come from a pretty musical family.  My grandfather was a piano player for Guy Lombardo and he  attended the 1st ever Academy Awards. Several of my cousins are teachers and professors of music and I played up until I was in college.

How would you describe the Cynergy Community?

Sometimes the people in the gym can be closer than family.  We spend a lot of time together and learn to rely on each other during what seems like stressful times and that definitely goes outside the gym.

What are some of your favorite or most memorable moments as a Coach?

I really enjoy seeing people I have been working with or know have been trying for a long time to accomplish something.  The look on their faces when they complete something is great. Biggest example is when someone, anyone, gets their first muscle up, The look you get is great.  Everyone has that ‘OH MY GOD’ moment when they get it.
