Athlete Spotlight: Karen Corio

Karen Corio is Cynergy CrossFit’s Athlete Spotlight for February! For anyone who knows Karen, you know she hates to be in the spotlight; but then again, if you know her, you know she is well-deserving of it! Karen has been a member of Cynergy since 2013. She began 8 years ago with our Boot Camp program and Sunday ALF classes, then joined morning CrossFit classes after much harassing… haha! She’s been incredibly committed from day 1! Whether in Boot Camp or in CrossFit class, Karen has always been a dedicated athlete. She is positive and eager, willing to listen to her coaches and not shy away from any movement or WOD. Her commitment to fitness is admirable, setting a good example to her children who are also Cynergy members. Congratulations, Karen Corio, on this well-deserved recognition!

What do you do for work?
Executive Assistant at Dunkin’ Corporate Office.

What would you like us to know about you and your family?
Married with two kids ages 24 and 19. Both kids have participated in the Boot Camp and CrossFit programs at Cynergy.

What is one thing that we may not know about you.
I hate having any type of attention on me so doing this is totally killing me. Also, I never thought I would ever do CrossFit…. always felt it wasn’t for me and a bit intimidating, but now I absolutely love it.

How long have you been CrossFitting?
I’ve been CrossFitting since November of 2019. However, I’ve been doing the Boot Camp for years.

What time do you typically train?
I started training at 5am, which was tough getting up so early but worked with my schedule. However, now that I’m working from home I now train at 7:30am.

What is your favorite lift and why?
I like a bench press or push press.

What is your favorite WOD and why?
I don’t really have one, but I do like EMOM’s

What are your current CF goals?
Stay fit and heathy.

What are your current life goals?
Eventually sell my house and move south to warmer weather. I absolutely hate winter.

What is your most memorable time as a CrossFitter?
I don’t really have one. However, I love the Sunday workouts…it’s a fun class with a great workout.

How has CF impacted your life outside of the box?
CrossFit has improved my life all around. I feel stronger and more confident. It’s been such a hard year for so many and now that I’m working from home it can at times feel very lonely and isolating. Starting my day at Cynergy really puts me in a better head space and creates a routine which is important to me. I honestly don’t know how I would’ve survived without it.

How would you best describe Cynergy to others?
Caring and fun community. Great community with coaches who are supportive and encouraging.
