Athlete Spotlight: Colleen Bates

Congratulations to Colleen Bates, Cynergy CrossFit’s Athlete Spotlight for October! Colleen has been selected for the Athlete’s Spotlight because she is a hard worker that never gives up whether it be in life or in the gym. She shows up everyday and gives it her all. She never quits and finishes every rep in every workout. She is a badass wife, mother, nurse, friend and athlete. She is a pleasure to have in class and coach!

What do you do for work?
I am a critical care nurse at South Shore Hospital. I have worked in the unit for 20 ½ years. I love taking care of critically ill patients and helping them get better. There is no better feeling than seeing your patient come back to life or come off life support.

What would you like us to know about you and your family?
Tom and I just celebrated our 17th wedding anniversary. We have two sons, Christian is 14 and is a freshman at West Bridgewater H.S. and Brayden is 12 and he just started 7th grade. Both boys play hockey so they keep us pretty busy running around from rink to rink. I love watching Christian speed down the ice and seeing Brayden save another goal!

What is one thing that we may not know about you.
I have never played a team sport because I am not very athletic. Thank goodness the boys got their father’s athletic ability. I had to learn about sports pretty quickly, but I love being a hockey mom!

How long have you been CrossFitting?
I started 6 years ago at CrossFit Boost in Brockton and I instantly loved it. I remember being terrified driving to my first instructional class. Unfortunately Boost had to close 2 years ago so I decided to workout at home again. Everyday I missed doing CrossFit, so I reached out to a few athletes who had started at Cynergy and loved it. So I made up my mind to give it a try and I loved it too.

What time do you typically train?
I usually train at the 9:15am class, but sometimes I go to the 7:30am class depending on my schedule. Both classes are great and I love the people.

What is your favorite lift and why?
This is easy, my favorite is deadlifts. I love to deadlift because it makes me feel powerful. I also have an advantage because I am only 5 feet tall!

What is your favorite WOD and why?
I don’t think I have a specific favorite WOD. I love workouts that are 21-15-9 or a descending ladder. Most WODs that have box jumps, cleans, deadlifts, DB snatches or short distance runs are my favorite.

What are your current CF goals?
My current goal is to be more confident and believe in myself. I am trying not to compare myself to others and just be the best version of me. Another goal is to improve my form and technique with cleans and snatches, always a work in progress!

What are your current life goals?
To be a good person and always help people when I can. I want to be a good role model for my boys especially in today’s crazy world.

What is your most memorable time as a CrossFitter?
Probably when I achieved my first pull up and was able to do Fran Rx, I had the hand rips to prove it. I was also excited when I achieved pull ups again after dislocating my shoulder. Another memorable moment for me was performing all the open workouts at the Rx weight this year.

How has CF impacted your life outside of the box?
CrossFit is my way to de-stress from life and work. It helps clear my mind and the endorphins make me feel happy. It just makes my day better and I feel better. I look forward to my workout everyday. It helps keep my mind and body healthy and strong so I can be strong for my family and my patients.

How would you best describe Cynergy to others?
Just come in and try it, I promise you will be instantly hooked. Cynergy means family! It was hard changing gyms, but everyone was so nice and welcoming. I love the CrossFit environment because everyone builds you up and they don’t let you quit. You want to try your best. I love all the people I have met and all the friends I have made through CrossFit.
