Athlete Spotlight: Anna Dowd

Congratulations to Anna Dowd, Cynergy CrossFit’s Athlete Spotlight for August! You truly epitomize the Cynergy athlete. You are humble in your abilities, gracious and supportive to your fellow athletes and you are a hell of a lot of fun to have in class!! We are very excited to highlight you!

What do you do for work?
I work full time as a Unit Director and Licensed Mental Health Counselor at Bridgewater State Hospital where I’ve been for over 4 years. I also work part time for Prevention Services at High Point Treatment Center to address addiction and substance use prevention throughout Plymouth County.

What would you like us to know about you and your family?
My boyfriend Rob and I have been together almost 7 years but we met many years before when we both worked at Shaws in Brockton. We currently live in Bridgewater with our rescue pup Murphy.

What is one thing that we may not know about you.
For some reason, I don’t like reading books anymore. When I was younger I spent most of my free time reading but as an adult I struggle to make time to sit and read.

How long have you been CrossFitting?
I started at Cynergy with Boot Camp 4 years ago and did my first official CrossFit workout on Labor Day. Colleen (Florence) had been telling me I should join for years prior but I didn’t think it was going to be something I liked. Clearly I was wrong.

What time do you typically train?
5am

What is your favorite lift and why?
Deadlifts or back squats. Who doesn’t love deadlifts and back squats? I like to push myself to go heavy and I can do that on 1RM deadlift or back squat day; yet at the same time I love high rep moderate loading of both of these lifts in a WOD.

What is your favorite WOD and why?
Diane. I love some heavy deadlifts. Handstand push-ups are a skill I didn’t think I would be able to get consistently so being able to do 45 in that WOD always feels awesome.

What are your current CF goals?
Improve my gymnastic skills (T2B, C2B, maybe a muscle up one day).

What are your current life goals?
Go on more vacations! I have had a full time job plus either full time school or a part time job for over a decade. I want to start spending more time with friends and family.

What is your most memorable time as a CrossFitter?
There are lots but I think one of my favorites was my first (and so far only) competition with Colleen as my partner. Being sisters, we have always competed and had some healthy sibling rivalry but getting to get out on the floor and compete with one another and push each other was an awesome experience. It was also humbling to see so many other amazing athletes push themselves and encourage others.

How has CF impacted your life outside of the box?
I’ve noticed that over the last four years I’ve become less shy and more confident which I believe is attributable to stepping out of my comfort zone with CrossFit.

How would you best describe Cynergy to others?
Cynergy tends to be that missing piece for everyone. It brings together fitness, competition, health, and community all in supportive way.
