Master Sergeant Michael Maltz

On March 23, 2003, Master Sergeant Michael Maltz, a U.S. Air Force PJ (Pararescue Jumper), was killed in action in a helicopter crash along with five of his brother PJ’s while attempting a rescue mission of injured/sick children in the mountains of Afghanistan.  MSGT Maltz is the late brother of Derrick Maltz, Special Agent in Charge of SOD.

According to those who were close to him, MSGT Maltz possessed an enormous amount of strength and stamina. With this in mind, the Maltz Challenge memorial event, a specifically challenging physical workout, was created by DEA Special Agents to honor MSGT Maltz and other men and women in our nation’s Armed Forces who have been killed in action.

The Maltz Challenge is not a fund raiser, there is no entry fee, and individual participation is voluntary.  During the past three years, hundreds of DEA Special Agents, Intelligence Research Specialists, Diversion Investigators, and other DEA personnel have participated in the Maltz Challenge. This event is open to all and the popularity has grown to the point that participation by individuals from other law enforcement agencies, the military, and civilians rivals that of DEA personnel.

Participants are challenged to complete the entire workout in the shortest amount of time possible.

A special thanks to Bill Butler from Weymouth Fire for the use of the “Fireman” to carry! Tougher than it looks! I give you guys a lot of credit for the work you do!
Thanks to all of you who knew what the WOD was and came in anyway…I’m proud of you!

I love participating in WOD’s like this. Knowing the story behind a WOD gives you that incentive to keep pushing on.

    Definitely tougher than it looked!

Glad to see the fireman kept his pants on after 5:00 a.m.!

Awesome pictures! Working out with vests/gear on, fantastic. An honor to do this one, for sure. Our undying respect and gratitude to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and to those in our armed services, our veterans and our police and firefighters; thank you!

Agreed – the storys behind these workouts make it worth every blister and tear!!! The pics of those in gear was great!

Does someone have a story behind FRAN?

Actually, in 1842 a woman named Francine Reed lived in beautiful estate on a peanut plantation with her family. She came from a very wealthy family however her judgement in gentleman was lacking and her husband, with a checkered past and reputation as a whiskey drinking cad, disgraced her and her family name by having an affair with a young woman working for the family.

Francine, fueled by humiliating rage, came upon her estranged husband one evening, barely lucid in a chair with whiskey upon his breath. She “helped” him to his feet and lead him to a spare servant’s quarters. Under the guise of helping him change, had him stand upon a step stool (actually, a cleaning bucket), slipped a previously prepared noose around his neck and quickly kicked the bucket out from underneath him. This, incidentally, is where the term ‘kick the bucket’ originated.

Unfortunately, the judgemental townspeople labeled Fran evil, vidictive, heartless bitch who murdered her spouse in cold blood, bringing a grown man to his knees. Thus, the legend of FRAN, the daughter of a wealthy peddler of filthy legumes, was born.

NEVER, EVER underestimate the damage and pain Fran can inflict!
