Cynergy CrossFitters Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa

By cynthiabrown | March 9, 2010

Diana Rosenstein, Maureen Lane, Chief John Llewellyn and Suzi Llewellyn

WOD: Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro for time:

On behalf of all of us at Cynergy CrossFit,  we congratulate the 4 of you on the WOD of a lifetime!

8 Days up and 2 Days down

The tallest free standing mountain in the World….19,340 feet!

Climbing through 9 Climates…90 degrees at the bottom, glaciers at the top…does it get any better than that?

I know I speak for everyone when I say how incredibly proud and honored we are for you all!

Welcome home!!!

From MEL:

It was truly the most unbelievable, incredible, and amazing experience of my whole life. It was so incredibly hard – mentally and physically (the altitude makes just getting dressed a workout) – but I never considered quitting and always knew during the climb that I would make it.  I faced and conquered a lot of fears/doubts/insecurities in that trip. Truly a life changing and empowering trip!  The guides praised the 4 of us for always sticking together and pushing each other and helping each other when we needed it – we told him that is what we do every morning!

You hear about people doing things like this and if you’re like me, you really don’t give it much thought. Having four friends taking this on together certainly brought Mt. Kilimanjaro front and center on my radar. The more I learn about it and hear about the trip, I cannot even believe you all did this. What an amazing, admirable, inspiring accomplishment. I look at this picture and I can’t even believe it. And ALL FOUR from CCF? Awesome! Congratulations to you all! You certainly have my undying respect and admiration; but as I’m sure you guessed, you all had that before you even left.

Mel’s words gave me goosebumps! All four of you are amazing people, athletes and friends and I am humbled by you accomplishment. None of you have ever known the word quit so I am not surprised that you conquered this latest goal and the support you must have shown eachother is such a testament to who you are as people. Way to go!

Cindy and Keith should take some pride in this too…you both have brought these friends together and helped prepare them for the journey of lifetime…

The Cynergy travel banner is available for your next adventure trip, race, or competition! Take it with you and take a picture with it. Africa first – what’s next???

After reading Maureen’s comments I was not sure what I wanted to say.
This was, without any doubt, the most difficult challenge of my life. Physically and emotionally. We all had to deal with our innermost demons at some point during the climb. I know that I may not have made it without my teammates. Suzie was amazing. She never spent a single night in a sleeping bag, never mind sleep in a tent for 10 days with most nights well below freezing. Even though she has asthma, her oxygen levels were the highest in our group and she always pressed on from the front of the pack. Diana (aka “D”) was awesome. She never had a bad word to say and was living her dream every step of the way. “D” always had a smile on and that lifted the rest of us when we needed it most. Maureen (aka MEL) was our rock. MEL always had a firm grasp of what we were doing and what we needed to do next (except for the few hours on a vertical rock was with 1000+ foot drops.) MEL has a unique way of putting things in perspective and moving the group forward. Without this special Team, I may not have made it to the top of the tallest freestanding mountain in the world.
What we cannot forget is how we came together. Special thanks to Cindy and Keith Brown – founders of Cynergy Crossfit. Thank you for creating this special family that you have dedicated so much of yourselves to. Thank you for bringing us together, training us both physically and emotionally to be better stronger people.
