Road to the CrossFit Games — Cynergy Style

By Chip | December 1, 2009

The 2010 CrossFit Games are on the horizon, and they are closer than you think. As it has in years past, the CF Games will feature both an individual competition as well as an a team competition (Affiliate Cup).

Specifics have not been announced yet as to dates of the Games, but like last year, athletes will have to qualify in a regional event(s) to get there. It is time for us to start getting ready for these events.

On Saturday, February 20, 2010, we will host a day-long event at the new box. The purpose of this event will be to determine Cynergy’s Affiliate Team(s) for the A-Cup and will feature a minimum of 3 WODs.

The event will be run like this: Each WOD will feature separate male and female heats. Each athlete will receive a score for each WOD they complete based on how they finish relative to their competitors. At the end of the day, scores will be added together and a “ranking” for both males and females will be established.

These two lists will be used to determine the team or teams that Cynergy sends to the Affiliate competition. For example, if the team must consist of 3 males and 2 females, we would select the #1, #2, and #3 males and put them with the #1 and #2 females to establish the Cynergy “A” Team. If one of the athletes could not attend the next competition for whatever reason, we would offer that slot to the next highest ranked athlete. Once the “A” team was established, we could then form “B” and “C” teams if there are enough competitors and interest.

All Cynergy athletes are encouraged to compete. Scaling will be allowed; however, if an athlete chooses to scale a WOD in any manner, he/she will automatically be ranked behind the athletes who completed the WOD rx’d.

Again, this competition is to determine our Affiliate teams, and athletes who plan on competing as individuals do NOT have to compete. However , it is HIGHLY recommended that all athletes compete in the event; if for some reason an individual athlete failed to qualify, he/she will still be able to compete in the Team competition — but only if they are ranked! Depending on dates of the events, there may even be some athletes who are willing and able to do both team and individual competitions, although this would be extremely difficult.

This is a one-shot deal — there will be no make-ups for this competition. If you miss the competition for any reason, you are ineligible to compete for Cynergy’s Affiliate Team(s). For some of you competing in the First Responders Challenge, I understand that you have six other challenges that you have to compete in. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, this is how we have to do this.

Last two things that I will talk about before I wrap this up:

1) Judging — We will be using judges and enforcing strict technique/range of motion in every event, in the exact same manner that you will find it in regional competitions. We will not accept crappy reps!

2) Goats — Some of the items that have been seen in prior competitions include (but are not limited to): Chest-to-bar pullups, ring dips, snatches, full r.o.m. handstand pushups, heavy overhead squats, double-unders, rope climbs, and yes, the dreaded muscle-up. If you have weaknesses in any of these areas, you will need to spend a little extra time (pre- or post- WOD) to work on them. Try to strengthen any weaknesses that you may have in your game — and if you’re unsure how, see one of your coaches!!!!!!!!!

I will post more information as it becomes available. Hopefully, this will provide additional motivation to train and eat (relatively) well through the holidays.

Best of luck! Feel free to email any questions you may have to: chip@cynergycrossfit.com

GREAT IDEA. Love this. This will be a great thing for the “big box”. Competition is a wonderful motivator. It would be great to have a team in Cali representing the CCF family!! Looking forward to this.

I know. It seems like a long way off, but I’m hearing that the qualifiers will be in March, so we need to have a plan of attack before that.

Personally, I think it’s extremely motivating to have a challenging goal off in the distance.

I hope we have enough people interested to field 10 teams!!!!!

I don’t think this should be a 1 shot deal. Like they did during the games if some one wants to try a wod that is a qualifier they can after the time, but a coach has to witness it. I don’t think we should eliminate our chances by a trip or a bad day. Granted this is no excuse not to try out, but there can be certain circumstances that allow for this.

There will be athletes that are new to us that may not hit their stride until after the event say in April and May.

Since it is a once a year deal and maybe a once in a life time for those of us who are older, we should be more liberal with the qualification. But still have a standard.

I don’t necessarily disagree Keith. The date that I heard for the Individual Qualifier was March 20-21. At this point, though, no one seems to know whether there will be a team qualifier or not, or whether A-Cup teams can just sign up and go to Aromas.

    If we learn that:
    A) There are no team qualifiers, or
    B) They are much later than the March 20th date that I’m going off of
–then we should definitely reconsider our selection process.

However, not sure what other options there are if the March 20th date applies to teams as well…

Clearly, this needs further discussion…and not just cause one of our All-Stars can’t be there (although that definitely plays a part, lol)!

Keith – “For those of us who are older” cannot be used as an excuse. Chip said so!

OK, we may have to reevaluate this situation… As soon as I know for sure what the status is for A-Cup teams, I will advise and Keith, Cindy, and I will come up with a solution.

But maybe we’ll have a challenge that day anyway… hmmmm….
