WTF?
By Holly | August 21, 2009
Hey ya’ll,
Just wanted to post a little paleo love….I found this great link from our facebook friend, Kate Rawlings. I know our paleo foods can get repetitive – so here are some great recipes to play with.
http://www.fitnessandfreebies.com/paleo/
How many people do you guys come into contact with during the course of your day that ask “what are you eating?” – as they look at your plate of meat, greens and almonds? How do you answer them? Do you tell them about Paleo? If so, how do they respond?
Some of my co-workers have attended the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, a program for holistic health counseling. The program teaches them to customize lifestyle and eating habits based on each individual client’s needs – which is great! However, they push, push, push the GRAINS! Big time. Their reasoning behind it: eat grains for PROTEIN because animal proteins come from cattle, etc. that are raised under questionable conditions.
Ummm, okay – so then find grass-fed beef!
We all know the effects grains have on our bodies. Even if we are “healthy” today, with a lifestyle free from grains you will avoid any future development of symptoms of Chronic systemic inflammation. It’s not the yolk in the egg that kills your cholesterol, it’s the loaf of french bread you had at the dinner table…oh, excuse me, “whole grain bread”.
I do believe that different variations of eating work differently for each person; however, when we have seen/read/witnessed the differences in our own bodies and performances, it’s hard to argue with that. There is SO much out there as far as hard evidence. Alex, Laurie, Jen – all of you guys heard this stuff at the Nutrition Cert. – it’s mind boggling that our doctors still push grains.
Anyway – I don’t expect to alter my co-workers beliefs. If they inquire I will explain my reasoning. Maybe getting them in for a WOD is the first step.
Continue to spread the CrossFit and paleo word! It is truly an amazing combination.

Thanks Holly!
To be honest..Took me a little while to go legit Paleo! I was a little Ummmm Weight watchers English with Almond Butter (1 tbsp) on the way to CF, Yogurt at 10am with my apple and 1/2 C fat free cottage cheese with my 1/2C Strawberries,1/2C Blue berries and 20 grapes (yes i count them)LOL at 1pm or lunch…
I thought….I need to get better, faster and stronger with my WOD’s!! It was tough!!! As is everythign WE do at ccf!! But it needed to be done..
Dropped the English muffin, Yogurt and Fat Free cottage cheese…replaced with hard boiled eggs, chicken.
Took me a bit, easing off dairy was not all that hard..It was more routine than anything.
Just wanted to let anyone know that is still on the fence going legit PALEO…It is worth it. I am full of energy and even seconds of a WOD or 5#’s heavier is improvement!!! And the feeling of knowing your body is healthier inside and out…Is so justified by a BIG a old SMILE!
(Cutting time of ya last PR is always a plus too)
People are always asking how i workout so much and eat so little….IF they Only knew. I seriously eat all day long…every 2 hours PEOPLE!!!!
Get it IN ya!!
LIFE is GOOD when ya healthy!!
Yes Holly, Living in the Crossfit & Paleo ROCKS!

Well Said Holly!
I have heard from a few people that now that the ‘contest’ is over, that they have reverted back to some old habits….WHY?
That little glass of wine that was a once a week habit is now back to each night, the “oh, this little piece of bread won’t hurt anything” starts to creep back in and the “what’s the harm in just a few chips” mentality is beginning to chirp in your other ear…..Don’t do it!
I am so glad to hear you, Suzi, have cut out the diary from your diet! At least long enough to notice the change in your performance….and boy has there been a change in your performance!
Don’t underestimate the small changes and the impact that they can make….on either side of the Paleo scale!
Start back up if you’ve slipped back out…..make it the way you live….we want you here for a long, long time!

Thanks Holly for the link. Look forwarded to some new recipes.
When I see people I haven’t seen in a while and even people I see almost daily they comment on how I look, and ask what are you doing, how did you lose weight? For a while I would try to explain paleo and crossfit but got tired of wasting my time.
It is funny the responses you get when you tell people “Oh I could never cut out bread” “You can’t not eat dairy – You need calcium” “That’s too hard – how do you find things to eat” “Everything in moderation, it’s unhealthy to cut out whole food groups”
I don’t find it really hard to eat paleo. There are some situations I have found myself in where it is more difficult to find something that I can eat. The biggest key is planning. You can’t eat healthy without planning no matter whether you are doing paleo or weight watchers. It does take a lot of time and effort and money to eat this way. I have discovered though that organic fruit and veggies and the natural meats definitely taste so much better.
Like Suzie I eat constantly during the day. Only time I notice feeling hungry is after a metcon day. I have learned to bring extra those days and that helps. I don’t miss so many things I thought I couldn’t live without – cheese, chocolate chip cookies! There are days I say “today I am going to have a cheat meal or maybe a dessert at this cookout” but when it comes down to actually doing it I find that I don’t because I know how much better I feel without it!
The benefits crossfit and paleo have added to my life are endless.
