I am not a doctor; however, Omega 3′s…..

By Holly | June 17, 2009

Are a great addition to your eating regimen! Everyone should be incorporating omega 3′s into their DAILY eating. Here’s why:

Omega 3′s are essential fatty acids that decrease blood pressure, help with inflammation and keep your cholesterol levels in check (low!).

They also promote muscle recovery and essentially make your cells more permeable, so when you are eating REAL, CLEAN foods, all of those nutrients get into your body/muscles/organs faster!

Omega 3′s are also a natural blood thinner. Fish oils are considered the number one alternative therapy to warafin (Coumadin), an anti-coagulant commonly prescribed medication. Studies have shown fish oils have an inhibitory effect on cancers! Several auto-immune diseases are also benefiting from omega 3 supplements! The list goes on and on.

Your best bet would be to add FISH OIL into your eating. You will find these in capsule (or liquid!) form containing EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), essential fatty acids that our body does not manufacture by itself.

Dosage: Recommendation is to consume 1 gram of fish oil per 10 lb. of body weight. Do the math and determine your amount. Break it up into a dosage that works for you (example, you need 15 grams of fish oil per day, take 5 capsules with breakfast, lunch and dinner). I know it sounds like a lot, but just think of it as that 4th component to your balanced meals.

A few tid-bits:

ALWAYS consume your fish oil with meals! That is when it is most beneficial AND prevents the dreaded fish burps.

IF you find you are having….stomach/bowel issues as a result of incorporating the fish oil, you may be slightly allergic to the long branched chain amino acids in the oil. You will need to buy a higher concentration of fish oil. You can find this at any health food store.

Great job on week 1 to all Paleo participants! Thanks!

Holly, thanks for the great info! Regarding the fish oil, is it better to spread the capsules out throughout the day or can you take them all at once? I’ve been taking Zone Omega capsules for about 10 months and have been taking them all mid-day with my lunch.
Thanks and keep the info coming. Very helpful!

Great Post Holly. I am 210 lbs and need to take 21 capsules a day for optimal efficiency. I had also heard from other nutritional certification sources that the 1000 grams per 10 lbs of body weight is for maximal effect. [If you are always sore, or have an acute injury] The range can be 500-1000 mg based on these factors.

Please don’t take them all at once…you’ll smell like a fish!

    Good Paleo stuff!

Great post!!! So exciting to see the potential health benefits that lay before all of us. I love the concept that consuming Fish oil throughout the day is the 4Th component of our balanced diet. Remember research is showing more and more that a large amount of our “diseases” are secondary to an increase of inflammation in our body. Omega 3’s actually help to turn off the switch of inflammation in our body. So gobble up that fish oil everyone! Good Luck!!!!!

Hey guys also of note…because fish oil is an anti-coagulant if you are currently on a “blood thinner” coumadin / plavix / lovenox / heparin etc please consult your healthcare professional. Also, is anyone has any questions or concerns about your medication or lab work in regards to fish oil and/or Palio Nutrition…. please don’t hesitate to ask me!
